I don't know that anyone could have been as lucky as me in finding a space for my first exclusive art installation. My mixed media series The Lovebugs includes mixed mediums in a wide variety of pieces in a many different sizes. I knew I wanted to take over a space, and also knew finding said space was going to be the largest feat.
After discussing the type of space I was looking for at a Hudson Community Incubator meeting, I was pinged by Eric, who runs HCI, through their app. He said someone came into a meeting and spoke about their space and it sounded like what I was looking for. He gave me a number and a name. Her name was Inju.
After missing each other at a few following events, we finally we able to connect at her and her partner Steve's space, Fahrenheit 451 House. When I stepped into the space I instantly knew. The outside, unassuming, was what I envisioned in my mind. I wanted it to look like a place you shouldn't necessarily be entering, and this fit the bill.
As I walked through each room, looked through the holes in the floor boards, and continued to get to know Inju and Steve, I knew the space was for me. It was the most instant gut feeling I had ever felt in my life. The rooms were filled with recording devices, players, books, and piles of other random collection of things, that only made me love the space more.
I wanted a space to take over and not a gallery. I wanted soul in the venue. The tree in the center of Fahrenheit 451 House was like a beating heart. The perfect place for The Lovebugs to hatch, develop, and expand. They were home.
